A message from Ninth District PTA President, Derick Boerner

“Back to School” is once again different from what we, and our children, are used to. That’s OK, we’ll continue to adapt and do the work PTA started over 123 years ago. It’s going to be hard at times. We’re going to be presented with new challenges. But one great aspect of PTA is the team. PTA officers, volunteers, parents, teachers, administrators, students, grandparents and community members as a team can be more powerful than we realize. Remember to work as a team to keep to our mission, “To positively impact the lives of all children and families.”

My name is Derick Boerner and I’m proud to be your Ninth District PTA President. I’m a father of two wonderful daughters, both students in San Diego Unified. My wife of 17 years is a special education teacher – I guess you can say education runs our household! I’m a tax accountant which is what brought me to PTA 11 years ago.

I hope you found time to celebrate summer and relax after a challenging school year. I was fortunate to take a twice-delayed road trip to Washington DC to visit family and share some of the amazing historical sites our country has to offer with my wife and daughters. I was able to visit the Deputy Secretary of Education, Cindy Marten, at the US Department of Education headquarters. Ms. Marten was the Superintendent of San Diego Unified when I was San Diego Unified PTA council president. It was great to see a good friend and of course talk PTA.

Our goals this year are to focus on membership and training. If you haven’t already done so, join your PTA. Other people aren’t going to join if they are not asked so ask everyone, ask often and ask in different formats. If your PTA is not yet using our online membership platform, TOTEM, now is the time to enroll.

Our leadership team is planning training opportunities for you – be on the lookout. If you need help with a specific topic, please reach out.

I hope to meet many of you in person this term, but we will continue to put safety first. Until then, we’re only a Zoom away!

Wishing everyone a wonderful year of PTA,

Derick Boerner
